So, as widely forecast and absolutely no surprise to anyone, Labour have won the election in a landslide secured with 412 seats out of 656. What is surprising - and to me shows how this electoral system is no longer fit for purpose in this modern age, is that they only secured 33% of the votes. Reform on the other hand secured 15% of the national votes and have just 4 seats. 100 times less. The Liberal Democrats won 71 seats with 12% and the Tories won 121 seats with just 10% more than Reform at 24%.
So, it seems Nigel Farage's next mission must be to secure electoral voting reform. My current favourite is the Swiss style called 'Direct Democracy' which is a hybrid of national proportional representation and parliamentary local representation. Read up on it yourself as to why this is a much more democratic solution to the ancient, unfair system we have that has kept the mono party of the UK in power for decades. It also allows for people's referendums on major changes to their constitution. We don't have a constitution but we should have and then we should be able to protect it from being abused by the Government, which is what has happened in the UK with the politicization of the courts system and the civil service.
Anyway, I digress. The reason I am writing this article is to encapsulate my thoughts on what this new Labour Government will mean for the UK so in the future I can measure how much I got right and how much I got wrong. I must say I am pretty pessimistic about the next 5 years.
Here goes
Taxes will rise significantly. This is not a surprise and it would probably have done so under a Conservative Government but we will see taxes increase probably after Labour have settled in, on Capital Gains Tax, pensions thresholds, inheritance tax, Council tax and of course VAT on Private schools. I expect motorists will be hit hard and a Capital Gains Tax to be introduced on sales of primary residences so the Government can snatch even more of the wealth of the middle classes. This one may have to come in a second term because this would be very unpopular. They really ought to have a read about tax reform from these guys at Tax Policy Associates.
Hate speech laws. Badly written, unwieldy, ill-defined laws to protect the 5 special categories: race, religion, sexual orientation, transgender identity and disability. I fear for free speech here. For example, Labour have already accepted the definition for Islamophobia from the Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) and it is 'defined' as "Islamophobia is rooted in racism and is a type of racism that targets expressions of Muslimness or perceived Muslimness." That's a word salad that covers just about anything and never mind how easy or hard it might be to enforce on the general public, it won't be hard to suppress discussions about these topics in the media with threats of fines and imprisonment. Find a very good video from The New Culture Forum on this topic below.
3. Even more immigration. Both legal and illegal. Starmer's plan to to tackle the small boats crisis is doomed to failure. If you do not remove the incentive for the immigrants to come they will keep coming and you will not stop it by tackling the 'gangs'. Any fool can see this. 50 years of the 'war on drugs' has resulted in most Britons being able to get their hands on cocaine as readily as a pint of milk and dropped off to their house by a motorcycle courier as quickly as an Indian takeaway. The reality is that Labour don't actually want to stop those boats and they don't want to reduce immigration. They want more of it. And they want more because they hate the indigenous British people - especially white, working class people and they want more voters. And they think that new immigrants vote Labour. And maybe they do - for now. But they are sewing the seeds of the destruction of the their party, democracy and the British Culture because one day, sooner than we all realize, these guys are going to organise and they are going to vote themselves into Parliamentary seats and Britain will look like a very different place when that happens. In fact, there are 5 people on this election who have been voted into a British election 'for Gaza'. The writing is on the wall here my friends. Wake up.
4. More DEI and more wokery. IMHO J Sorel the Daily Skeptic 'sees' Starmer. In this excellent article he argues that he is no ordinary politician. He is a self-righteous zealot. A dangerous man. A man who fundamentally does not believe in democracy. A man that is capable and willing to change the law to enable him to use the power of the state to crush dissent and bypass the safeguards we have to preserve our democracy. Expect to see laws enacted that will promote transgenderism in schools, limit discussion on 'controversial' topics, expand the scope and power of unelected quangos, further empower the Supreme Court to override parliament. This is as close to a religious fanatic that has ever been elected to the highest office and the changes he will make will be profound, far reaching and for the most part unintended because of the chronic lack of intellectual firepower in the Labour party.
5. Racism and social unrest. Promoting apartheid is such a backwards step it boggles the mind that anyone would consider this in the 21st Century. But of course this is reverse racism, 'anti-racism' and in this day and age this is not only acceptable, it is seen as morally justifiable. Labour will press forward with racist ideas to promote one race or religion over another (they foolishly conflate Islam with a race already) and push black owned, Islamic owned, women, transgender owned, any other perceived marginalized 'minority' owned businesses and quangos to the front of Government procurement contracts and anything else that can be influenced or awarded by the Government. The result of this will be actually more racism. A backlash from the ordinary citizen who is now disenfranchised, marginalized, pigeon-holed and forced to take sides. I cannot ever remember reading anything in history where this works out well.
Of course, I hope I'm wrong. I think that having Nigel Farage in the House will really be very awkward for Starmer especially over anything to do with immigration. He'll be watching and he'll be noisy but he can be marginalized in the house as he only has 4 seats. He is very powerful in the traditional media though, regardless of how much they despise him and on social media he is well ahead of any main party.
This goes one of two ways as far as I can see at this point. The case for the dark side,
Starmer imposes his will on the UK wins a second term and we see pretty much the end of the UK as we have traditionally known it. A 10 year government is enough time to change the UK in ways we can only glimpse at now and if Starmer wins a second term I don't expect to see a right wing or centre right wing party in power in the UK possibly ever again.
Under this scenario, we may see a break-up of the Union with Northern Ireland re-joining the Republic. The SNP have destroyed themselves for the time being but they or someone like them will be back sooner or later pushing for further devolution.
Religious Balkanization. Parts of the UK will be separate and probably under separate primary legislation as such as Sharia Law. Some parts of the UK are effectively under Sharia law already but this would be legalized. Those areas might not have any pubs, sell no alcohol in supermarkets, not allow same-sex marriage and have its own courts and tribunals to deal with transgressions of these laws.
Severe restrictions on free speech. Much like a religious state, Blasphemy would be illegal and as time goes on the punishment for it will be more severe, starting with fines and I imagine quickly going to imprisonment as it will be readily conflated with incitement to religious violence. It will rarely be discussed in the media. The comedy clubs will be fun - at least those that aren't underground. I predict a very subversive, hidden under culture will arise. Maybe a good time to invest in bars with hidden spaces to make some exciting speakeasys.
The middle classes will be decimated. Starmer's philosophy and especially Angel Raynor's is something like this. Four people have two eyes, one person has one eye. This is unfair and so we should pluck out the eyes of the other three so we can all be equal (the government needs two eyes though, so no plucking there). He will tax house sales, he will destroy the wealth of the middle classes and give it to the freshest immigrants. He won't even give it to the traditional 'working' class because he hates them and there really is no such thing anymore. There is the 'Non-working' class or the 'benefits class' and then there is anyone who owns anything. Those who own nothing have to rely on the state. Labour is the party of the big state and thus they will be in power for ever.
The rich will flee and investment will dry up. The top 1% pay 30% of the taxes in the UK. Unfortunately I am not one of them, but if I put myself in their wealthy silk slippers, I wouldn't be stopping around for higher taxes, social unrest, limitations on my free speech and to basically be told that I am a parasite, a bigot and a racist. And I wouldn't be investing in a country where I wasn't certain that I couldn't get my money out of or get hammered by a some new 'equality tax' imposed for the 'greater good'.
I am hopeful that this doesn't happen but I think a case can be made for Britain degenerating into a cultureless wasteland, a shadow of its former self, a cautionary tale for a country that has allowed itself to be invaded on mass and denigrated by poisonous ideologies. A broken, broke society where people are shamed into silence by puritans, punished for their race and sexual orientation, loathed by the establishment and impoverished as punishment.
The best case as far as I can see.
Labour make a howler of the first term and lose in an election to Reform or to another centre-right party (but not the Conservatives) and then the real business of reform and change begins for the good of the country. How that might look will form the basis of another article.
